Tagalog, along with English is the official language in the Philippines. In 1937, when it was declared the national languageof the Philippines, it was officially Pilipino, but Tagalog is the traditional name and the name which is used in colloquial specch. It was spoken as mother of tongue or as a second language by up to 50 millions people in the Philippines.
Tagalog was declared the national language for a number of reasons. It is native to the Southern paet of the island of Luzon and so was the dialect spoken in the national city, Manila. It is the most widely spoken and understood language in the Philippines.
Taglog is a member of the Austranesian language family. It incorporates words form other languages and shows elements of sanskrit and Arabic. It has aslo been influenced by Chinese and by Spanish, due to over three centuries of colonial domination of the Philippines by Spain.
Tagalog has spread widely throughout the Philippines because of official government policy mandating its study in schools, but also because of economic and social importance of the Manila Area and because of the influence of Tagalog films, broadcasts and reading materials.
Furthermore, in many areas where migration patterns have led to populations with a great deal of ethnic and linguistic variety, Tgalog has become the means on inter-group communications, Thus Tagalog is now the main language.
